Asian American Action Fund Board Renews Call for Diverse Battleground State of Nevada to Host First in the Nation Primary Following 2022 Midterm Election

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, the Asian American Action Fund (AAAFund) reiterated its strong support for Nevada, a state with a significant Asian Americans and Pacific Islander (AAPI) population, in its bid to host the First-In-The-Nation presidential primary in 2024 and beyond. The Democratic National Committee’s Rules and Bylaws Committee is scheduled to meet on December 1st to decide on potential changes to the order of early states in the primary. The AAAFund previously endorsed Nevada’s application to hold the first nominating contest in July.
The Board of the Asian American Action Fund released the following statement:
“With the results of the 2022 elections behind us, prioritizing a diverse and truly representative battleground state like Nevada to vote at the very beginning of our party’s process to pick future presidential nominees has never been more important. The political power of the Asian American and Pacific Islander community is growing every single year, and they will decide national elections in 2024 and beyond as the fastest-growing voting bloc in the country. After helping secure a Democratic Senate majority for two more years and winning key races up and down the ballot, Nevada remains the only state in contention to hold the first nominating contest that is home to a significant AAPI population. Understanding how to persuade and mobilize working class AAPI voters will help us keep building a stronger and broader coalition for winning the White House, and that’s what Nevada will deliver as the First-In-The-Nation primary.”
Background:
Nevada is a majority-minority state that ranks third in the country in diversity based on the Census Bureau’s 2020 diversity index. Nevada’s AAPI electorate has grown to 11% of the state, rising dramatically over the past two decades. Nationally, the AAPI community has become the fastest-growing racial or ethnic group in the U.S. electorate, with the ability to decide elections in key battleground states.
The AAAFund is devoted to supporting progressive candidates who will represent Asian American Pacific Islander communities. For the past 20 years, AAAFund has endorsed and advocated for more than 200 progressive AAPIs and Democratic candidates serving AAPI communities for office at every level of government.
