February 10, WASHINGTON, DC – The Board of the Asian American Action Fund (AAAFund) endorses Julie Su for the nation’s next Secretary of Labor. Su currently serves as the Deputy Secretary of Labor. The Board was proud to support Su’s nomination for the Secretary of Labor role in 2020. Su is a trailblazing leader focused on the needs of workers from her time representing female immigrant garment workers to serving as California Secretary of Labor, and now in her current position.

The Biden-Harris Administration now looks to fill a Cabinet-level position for the first time since the transition period. At present, no Asian American or Pacific Islander (AAPI) sits in a Cabinet position.

The AAAFund Board offers the following statement:

“Current Deputy Secretary of Labor Julie Su is eminently qualified to be Secretary of Labor. Su’s depth of experience and history of relationship-building as a labor organizer, lawyer, and California Labor Secretary, makes her the ideal choice.

The Board supported her nomination to the position in 2020, noting at the time her commitment to securing fair labor standards for all workers, promoting workers’ rights, and fighting for equitable opportunities for historically marginalized communities.

Her work in the Administration has only deepened her experience at the national level and would allow her to seamlessly transition to leading this important Department. These last few years have been a critical time for labor and we understand the need for a Labor Secretary to hit the ground running.

The Board urges the Biden-Harris Administration to nominate Julie Su as its first AAPI Cabinet member. AAPIs are the fastest growing ethnic and racial minority in the country and helped to deliver the Democratic majority in the Senate. We believe her perspective as an Asian American woman would be invaluable and encourage the Biden-Harris team to fulfill their commitment to equitable representation throughout their Administration.”
